This newly revised checklist shows expected occurrance data plus rare sightings for the 240 species of birds that have ben seen on Vashon-Maury Island. Revised July 2009. Vashon-Maury Island Bird Checklist
Each year around Christmas or New Year, volunteers survey the Island and count birds in their own back yard.

Short Billed Dowitcher A juvenile Short-billed Dowitcher was seen August 26, 2007 at KVI Beach by Gene Hunn, a birder from off-island. It is only the 4th island record for this species. Photo 1 Photo 2

Snow Bunting at Point Robinson
Sue Trevathan found a Snow Bunting at Point Robinson on December 6, 2005. This is the first confirmed sighting of this bird on Vashon-Maury Island. As of January 28, 2006 there were 6 Snow Buntings present. Photo 1 Photo 2 More about Snow Bunting
Rare Lewis' Woodpecker seen on Vashon
John and Ellie Friars found a Lewis' Woodpecker at their house in Ellisport near KVI Beach on October 10, 2005. Larrison's The Birds of King County mentions them for Vashon back in the 1940's but no other reports until this one. Photo 1 Photo 2
