The Enjoyment of Birds

Vashon Audubon offers a unique series of classes for both beginning and more experienced birders, starting September 9. The courses will be taught by a team of experienced birders with an interactive style focusing on how to enjoy the beauty and natural history of birds commonly seen on Vashon.

Each class session is designed to build on the previous session as participants learn the birds by their appearance, seasonal occurrence, habitat and song.

The course is likely to answer these questions while deepening your understanding and appreciation of birds:

• What is that beautiful bird outside your window?
• Which owl was it that you heard last night?
• Why do we see so many birds on the water in winter, yet hardly any in summer?
• Which birds migrate here for the summer only?
• Which ones stay all year?
• How do birds migrate long distances?
• How long do they live?
• What do the different species eat?
• Where are great places to see birds on Vashon-Maury Island?
